Independent Colleges & Universities

High school prep: Preparation for a traditional collegiate career begins in high school. You’ll need to take preparatory coursework in core subjects, Advanced Placement coursework, and keep your grade point average up. College admissions counselors look for well-rounded candidates who have made the extra effort to participate in extracurricular, civic and special-interest activities.

Testing requirements: Sharpen that pencil. The SAT, ACT, admission applications and essays are likely to be in your future.

Experience: Students have the opportunity to take classes in many different subjects, not just in their chosen majors. Also, they’ll get to meet new people and partake in social and academic activities. Therefore, they leave college with a broad range of life experiences.

Thumbs up: Most colleges and universities offer a few semesters of wiggle room before having to select a major, which gives students a chance to explore different interests before making a final decision.

Thumbs down: True entrance into the workforce and a professional-level salary is often four to five years away.
